The Canadian womens' hockey team won the gold medal (and there was much rejoicing in my corner of the lab), while the U.S. team LOST to Sweden and thereby put themselves out of the gold medal game (and there was much obnoxious taunting in my corner of the lab). However, the Canadian mens' hockey team failed to even make it to the bronze medal game. Ah well, at least the U.S. mens' hockey team didn't make it to the medal games either. That would have been unbearable.
Despite the disappointment with the mens' hockey team (it's OK, all will be forgiven if you win the gold medal in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics), I am stunned at how well Canadian Olympians did: 7 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 7 bronze medals, which is good enough to put us fifth overall. It shouldn't take something like this to make me proud to be Canadian, but sometimes it's what's needed after a Bush lap dog like Stephen Harper is elected as prime minister (thanks to Valerie for the wonderful description!).
My favourite story of the Turin Olympics was that Jamaican-born Laschelles Brown got his Canadian citizenship case expedited so that he could act as the brakeman for the Canadian two-man bobsledding team, which ended up winning a silver medal... and more amusingly, he became interested in the sport after watching the movie Cool Runnings, which was about the original Jamaican bobsled team which competed in the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Honestly, I am not making this shit up!

Really, we got 24.5 medals. The one that Dale Begg-Smith got for Australia (moguls) really should be given partly to Canada, since he grew up there and learned all his tricks there. Apparently, starting a multi-million dollar company while training for the Canadian team don't go hand in hand. Australia didn't seem to mind ... "what, you big $$$ IT company and you're going to win gold medals ... sure, we'll let you be australian"
Definitely not far off the winter powerhouses like Germany and Austria ... so it looks good for Vancouver 2010. Vive le Canada!
should say "you HAVE A big $$$ IT company". oops.
But by that token, the mens' two-man bobsled silver medal counts as 0.5, because Jamaica is all pissed off that Laschelles Brown defected to Canada.
