Almost 7,000 years ago, a massive eruption caused the collapse of the caldera of Mount Mazama, which eventually collected enough water from rain and snowfall to become Crater Lake.

Rodents in southern Oregon are known to be carriers for bubonic plague, and the pamphlet given to all visitors upon entering Crater Lake National Park explicitly warns people not to touch the rodents. And yet I saw a man petting the following chipmunk-like creature:
