Behold the turkey in all its deep fried glory.

Most of the pics below are from George. I was making of a movie of the proceedings (until I ran out of room on my memory card), and I'll try to post that once I figure out the html code to embed a movie in a web page.

Joe lowers the hapless turkey into the hot oil.

Shrieks of agony issue from the vat of boiling oil.

The turkey has met its doom.

While Joe is covering up the pot, I'm on the far left frantically trying to free up more room on my memory card (the movie took up a ton of space) and Darren is holding the flashlight for illumination while drinking his beer (he's so good at multitasking).

After one hour, we have a mighty fine looking turkey.

Darren makes sure that we won't get food poisoning from the turkey (though it will make us fat). George is probably thinking, "Hmm, deep fried haggis balls soon."

Deep fried turkey goodness.

Some things that we learned while deep frying the turkey and other edibles:
  1. Don't let the oil get cold, otherwise it partially solidifies and you have to get it warm and liquid again before you can pour it into the pot. And that will delay dinner for an hour or so and make certain people cranky and everyone else really drunk.
  2. Don't stick all your haggis balls all at once into the basket, unless you want a gigantic mass of deep fried haggis.
  3. Jimmy Dean sausage makes for some really excellent Scotch eggs. And Scotch eggs are good hangover food.
  4. If you like greasy, oily fries, then dunk a huge amount of shoestring-cut potatoes into your oil and watch them suck all the oil up.
  5. My mom's recipe for deep fried pork chunks requires only three ingredients besides the pork but is oh so delicious. Especially with plum sauce.
  6. Snickers bars at room temperature will simply disintegrate when dropped into hot oil (we probably should have frozen them first before battering and deep frying them) and are a good way to make a batch of oil unuseable... unless you want all of your deep fried food to carry that extra flavour of melted Snickers.

The scotch eggs were fantastic! Sorry about the haggis though. Everything was fine until Darren started pouring those 8 oz shots (he says it was 5 oz) of single malt. Oh dear!
